Sneads Ferry & Holly Ridge

Sneads Ferry & Holly Ridge

Sneads Ferry and Holly Ridge are sister communities located on the south side of Camp Lejeune in Onslow County, fondly referred to as "out the back gate" of the military base. Both communities are rich in the old and the new, juxtaposing deep history with the progress of consistent development and change.

Sneads Ferry is the second largest municipality in Onslow County and is located on the south side of MCB Camp Lejeune, fondly referred to as "out the back gate." It is also home to MARSOC, an elite division of Marine Corps special operations. Once a rural fishing village, Sneads Ferry has experienced a surge in development in recent years, adding many restaurants, retail establishments, and residential homes to it's resume. With it's close proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean, many people choose to live in Sneads Ferry for its quaint, coastal-country charm.

THE event of the year in Sneads Ferry is the historic Shrimp Festival, honoring the tradition of the local seafood industry. Even today, Sneads Ferry is heavily dependent on the seafood industry, catching over 385 tons of shrimp, 25 tons of flounder, and approximately 493 tons of other seafood like clams, scallops, oysters, mullet, spot, grouper, soft shell and hard shellc crabs, sea bass, and more annually.

Where did the town get it's name? In 1728, Edmund Ennett established a ferry on the banks of the New River. Originally called, "Ennett's Ferry", it became a key element in the Post Road linking Suffolk, Virginia with Charleston, South Carolina. By 1759, two ferries operated there, one from each bank of the New River. Robert Snead was the proprietor of the ferry on the north shore so the community that developed on the banks of the crossing site became known as "Sneads Ferry." Caroline Pearson propelled the ferry until it was replaced with a bridge in 1939.

Sneads Ferry is in the 28460 zip code, which it shares with North Topsail Beach.

Holly Ridge is another small community on the south side of Camp Lejeune, and offers more than meets the eye. The Town of Holly Ridge (city limits) is the gateway to Topsail Island beaches, while greater Holly Ridge is actually "in" Sneads Ferry, with the line drawn right down the middle of NC-HWY 210.

Holly Ridge is primarily residential, with homes going up everywhere! Whether you are looking for a small first home, a townhome, or an elaborate space for your growing family, the town has something for everyone. Popular neighborhoods include The Neighborhoods of Holly Ridge, Summerhouse, Redd's Cove, The Preserve at Morris Landing, and King's Harbor. Many of these communities also have amenities such as a community pool, clubhouse, boat dock and/or kayak launch.

Holly Ridge is home to historic Camp Davis, an World War II Army camp specializing in anti-aircraft, seacoast defense, and barrage balloon training operations. It was eventually closed in 1948, but military operations can still be observed from time to time in the surrounding areas.

Local schools to both communities are Dixon Elementary, Dixon Middle, and Dixon High.
